The Suicide Squad 2 – which, technically, would be Suicide Squad 3 – could well happen after James Gunn's DC debut has proven a big hit with fans and critics alike. Gunn's movie acts as both a reboot to the critically-derided Suicide Squad (2016), given that it follows a totally new story, and a sequel, since it brings back the likes of Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn and Joel Kinnaman's Rick Flag. But is this the only time we'll see this particular iteration of Task Force X on the screen or will we be seeing The Suicide Squad 2 in the future? Equally, if there's no direct sequel, might another director come in for another sequel/reboot for Suicide Squad 3? We're about to delve into spoilers for The Suicide Squad to examine what might come next, so look away now if you haven't seen the movie yet. Warner Bros. The Suicide Squad 2: Will Suicide Squad 3 happen? Unlike most comic book movies, The Suicide Squad doesn't directly set up another movie and instead uses its post-credits scene to tease the upcoming Peacemaker series, which will see John Cena reprise his role as the patriotic killer. In fact, the movie seems to actively rule out the possibility that these characters will return in a sequel that would see them take on another deadly mission. The finale sees the surviving squad members defeat Starro with the help of some heroic rats, and then Bloodsport (Idris Elba) uses the evidence of the US government's involvement in Project Starfish to blackmail Amanda Waller (Viola Davis). He gets Waller to agree to leave them all alone and if she doesn't, the evidence will be released to the world. So it seems unlikely that Bloodsport and co would agree to go on another mission unless Waller can come up with some devious workaround (we wouldn't put it past her, to be honest). That certainly points to another reboot if The Suicide Squad is enough of a hit for Warner Bros to greenlight another movie. But if they want to go a different route than the 'team takes on another mission' one, Gunn revealed to EW he's been thinking about a sequel. "I've had ideas, actually. If I did a sequel, it's not like, 'Hey, let's assemble another team and let's do this! ' It would be very different, " he teased. Gunn also revealed to a fan on Twitter that he's spoken to DC about another project post- Peacemaker. Gunn will be a bit busy for the rest of this year and next year though with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3, set for release in May 2023. That means it probably wouldn't be until 2023 that he could start work on a new Suicide Squad movie, leading to a 2024 release at the earliest. There were five years between Suicide Squad and The Suicide Squad, so it's not out of the question. And since Gunn and Task Force X proved such a wonderful match, we'd happily wait a few years for more of the same. The Suicide Squad 2 cast: Who could return in Suicide Squad 3? Gunn wasn't kidding when he said that he was allowed to kill anybody, so there are only a few characters left alive at the end of The Suicide Squad who could return in a direct sequel. In terms of main characters, they are Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Bloodsport (Idris Elba), Ratcatcher 2 (Daniela Melchior), King Shark (Sylvester Stallone) and Amanda Waller (Viola Davis). The credits scenes did reveal that both Weasel (Sean Gunn) and Peacemaker (John Cena) had survived their apparent deaths though, so they could be back too. Peacemaker would have to survive his upcoming series though. Technically, there would also be the scope for characters still alive from the first movie to return, so that could lead to comebacks for Deadshot (Will Smith) and King Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje). Or if it's another reboot, we could be welcoming a whole new squad to the screen with just one or two characters continuing from The Suicide Squad. You'll just have to watch this space for now.
